Minor A Softball:

Who is it for? The Minor A Division is for 8 – 11 year-olds who want to continue to develop their softball skills. Players should have basic fundamental skills and many players in Minor A have played at least 1 season in the Minor B / C Division as a 7 and/or 8-year-old. Primary goals are to give players as much experience and playing time as possible and encourage ongoing development for all players in all phases of the game.

How are Teams Chosen? For spring softball, players are encouraged to attend a try out for a skills assessment prior to the start of the season. Not all players attending assessments will be placed on a team within this division due to skill level, space limitations and safety concerns.

What Skills are Taught? At the Minor A level, kids will pitch the entire game from a distance of 35 feet and use an 11-inch softball. A primary objective at this level is to help players be more comfortable at the plate and improve their ability to hit live pitching. Key points for development include learning situational awareness, making defensive plays, identifying the strike zone and demonstrating proper form when catching and throwing. Additional pitching technique will also be emphasized at this level.

How is the Game Played? In Minor A, players are out after three strikes or walk after four balls. This helps build confidence, develops good hitters’ discipline and speeds up the game. Every player is in the batting lineup for every game. While all players bat, only nine players take the field on defense. Coaches will put players in a wide variety of positions they can play safely. Everyone sits on the bench from time to time. Scores are recorded and league standings are kept.
Parent support is needed for field preparation, post-game field maintenance and scorekeeping during the game.
